Dr. D. Dean "Deannie" Cantrell passed away peacefully at her home on June 11, 2017. She was born May 26, 1934, her parents were George and Lura Cantrell of Milan.
Dr. Cantrell started her education at Union Central School and graduated as valedictorian of the Milan High School class of 1952. She received her undergraduate degree at Lambuth College, her Masters from George Peabody and her PhD at the University of Tennessee. Over the years she taught thousands of students. She began teaching in Milan and went on to teach English in Nuremberg, Germany; Los Angeles, California and Houston, Texas. The last 30 years of her teaching career were spent at Berry College in Rome, Georgia. She was a member of AAUW, Sigma Tau Delta, Iota Tau Delta, and the Jane Austen Societies of North America and England. She had many articles published about Jane Austen.
Dr. Cantrell was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, George William Cantrell, Jr. She is survived by her sister, Joyce Ann Cantrell, who was her caregiver for the past 16 years. She is also survived by her niece, Alison Cantrell Bell and her husband, Phillip; her great niece, Rachel Bell Harbison and her husband, Chad; her great nephew, William Daniel Bell and his wife, Jenny; and her great great niece Laura Bethany Harbison. She is also survived by her sister in law, Imogene Cantrell.
Funeral service will be Saturday, June 17th at 11:00am, visitation will be from 10:00 until 11:00, at Bodkin Funeral Home, Milan. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery.
The family requests donations in her memory be given to "Friends of the Library", Mildred G. Fields Memorial Library, 1075-A East Van Hook St., Milan, TN 38358, the Pat Summitt Foundation or Oakwood Baptist Church.
