Betty Joan Harris, Joan to everyone who loved her, left this world on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at the age of 94, after a long life spent growing things, feeding people, and holding a family together.
She was a dutiful wife, a devoted mother, and the kind of grandmother a man spends the rest of his life trying to deserve. When she lost her husband, Gerald, in 1995, she carried on for thirty more years with grace and the bearing of royalty.
The earth answered to Joan. A professional florist by trade and a gardener by calling, she kept two vegetable gardens, one of them a full quarter acre, and flower beds that spilled color across the yard. There was nothing she could not coax up out of the ground, nothing she could not put up in a jar, nothing she could not turn into a meal. Three times a day her kitchen produced food worth driving miles for, a country breakfast at dawn, a noon dinner crowded with more sides than the table could hold, and a supper that owed the earlier meals nothing.
She was also, God love her, a keeper of secrets. Before her little brother and sister would come to visit, she would send a grandson out with the nitrogen so the greens and the blooms would be at their loudest when company turned in the drive, and when asked why, she would only smile. She taught more than one person to bake her famous coconut cake and left a step out every time, so that hers stood alone. “A pinch,” she would say, though a pinch in Joan’s hand could be a fistful. You had to watch her like a hawk.
The summer of 2000 was the last year she outworked a teenager, and even after that was close. She rose with the sun, chopped weeds until it was time to come in and cook, went back to the rows, came in again at noon, spent the hottest hours keeping a house she loved, and had supper on the table by evening. She was 68. Her fourteen-year-old grandson could not keep her pace, and she kept it for years.
Above all of it, Joan belonged to her Lord and to Double Springs Cumberland Presbyterian Church, where she was a member and a matriarch. She was the most Christian woman her family has ever known, and not one of them wonders where her soul rests tonight. She has only traded one garden for a better one.
She was the eldest of her siblings and was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Harris; her sons, Jimmy Harris and Joey Harris; her grandchildren, Lindsey Harris and Bryan Barnes; and her brothers, Jerry Nowell and Joseph Nowell.
She is survived by her son, Jack Harris; her daughter, Jan Barnes; her sister, Janice West; her grandchildren, Justin Harris, Jana Scott, Logan Harris, and Ryan Barnes; and her great-grandchildren, John Rogers, Hunter Harris, Jaclyn Rogers, Harris Scott, Vivian Harris, and Halston Harris.
Visitation will be held at Bodkin Funeral Home on Saturday, August 1, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., with a service at 12:00 p.m., followed by a graveside committal service at Double Springs.
The family welcomes flowers, which she would have appreciated more than most.
