Beverely Sue (Mays) Anderson died Nov. 2, 2017, in Memphis, Tenn., with her daughter April holding her hand. Ms. Anderson was born March 5, 1938, in Russellville, AR. As a child growing up in Arkansas, Ms. Anderson was believed to be the worlds youngest radio deejay to host her own radio show, broadcasting from Arkansas Tech Universitys radio station beginning at the age of 8. She went on to be a stellar student at Humbolt (Tennessee) High School. She is an alumna of Memphis State University, where she was elected president of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. After marrying and starting a family of her own in the 1960s, she was named Woman of the Year by the Milan, TN, Jaycees in 1973 for her "many contributions to the community," including creating an activity-based program that engaged high school students that officials credited with causing a significant reduction in vandalismduring the week of Halloween. Ms. Anderson also served as a deejay at a radio station in Milan where she would play then-contemporary hits, including Three Dog Night and Arlo Guthrie. She was a loving mother who spent many selfless years shuttling her two children to and from countless baseball/softball games and gymnastics meets around the greater Atlanta area throughout the 1970s. A gifted writer, Ms. Anderson was a successful freelance journalist in Dunwoody, GA, and later in Nashville. Her byline could also be found in national magazines. She eventually joined Nashville-based Southwestern/Great American Companywhere her talents propelled her from an administrative support position to communications director, spearheading many of the companys largest projects during her two decades there before retiring in 2005. After her children were grown, Ms. Anderson was on the pioneering edge of downtown Nashvilles residential renaissance. Beginning in 1989, she lived in a brick-walled loft apartment on Second Avenue. She entertained regularly from this increasingly chic locale, with her most grand celebration annually being a Fourth of July fireworks-viewing party that culminated on the rooftop of theriverfront condo. In 2014, Ms. Anderson and her daughter relocated to Memphis to live with Ms. Andersons sister, Penny Mays where she enjoyed being closer to her two brothers, Dr. Kit Mays and Haywood Mays, and their families whom she cherished. She is preceded in death by her parents Haywood and Frances Mays, and her former husband Paul Anderson, Jr. She is survived by April Anderson, daughter; James (Skip) Anderson, son; her daughter-in-law Andrea (Oldendorf)Anderson; Berit Oldendorf Anderson, granddaughter (expected Jan. 1, 2018); Penny Mays, sister; and Dr. Kit Mays, and William Haywood Mays, brothers. The funeral and burial will take place at 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 5, graveside at Oakwood Cemetery in Milan, TN.
