Obituary

Doris Marie Hanks, a beacon of love and faith, passed away peacefully on February 20, 2026, at the age of 73. Born on June 5, 1952, to the late Finis Scott and Gladys Hastings Scott, Doris grew up surrounded by a large and loving family. Her life was a testament to the values of care, devotion, and service, which she embodied until her last breath.

Doris was the cherished wife of Bro Billy Hanks, with whom she shared a beautiful and enduring partnership. Together, they built a life filled with joy, raising their children, Billy Austin Hanks (Terri) of Atwood and Penny Hanks Goodwin (Greg) of Atwood, who will forever remember her as a guiding light and a source of unwavering support. Doris's legacy continues through her beloved grandchildren, Jacob Cavaness and Hudson Hanks, and her great-granddaughter, Adeline Cavaness, who brought immense joy to her later years.

A proud graduate of Dyersburg High School in 1970, Doris dedicated her life to the noble calling of homemaking, creating a warm and welcoming home for all who entered. Her dedication to her family was matched only by her commitment to her faith and community. As an active member of the Women's Missionary Union at Poplar Springs Baptist Church, Doris's faith was a cornerstone of her existence, guiding her actions and inspiring those around her.

Doris's involvement with The Gideons International reflected her passion for outreach and her desire to spread the word of God. Her faith was further exemplified by her membership at West Carroll Unity Baptist Church, where she served with grace and humility. Her presence in these communities will be deeply missed, but her influence will continue to be felt by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

In addition to her parents, Doris was preceded in death by her grandson, John Robert Cavaness, brothers, Edward, Farris, Dale, Ray Scott, and sister, Jean White, as well as an infant brother and sister. She leaves behind a legacy of love and faith that will be cherished by her family, including several nieces and nephews, who will continue to honor her memory by living the values she instilled in them.

Funeral services will take place at 2:00 PM Tuesday, February 24, 2026, at the Bodkin Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Poplar Springs Cemetery in Atwood. Visitation with the family will be Monday evening from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM and Tuesday from 12:00 PM until service time.

Memorials may be directed to the Gideons International.
