Dr. David
Holt
February 19, 1932 – October 22, 2024
Dr. David Harrison Holt was born in Milan, TN on February 19,1932 and passed away on October 22, 2024, in Cary, NC after a hard-fought battle with acute leukemia.
He was one of 7 children of Lonnie and Mattie Holt, longtime residents of Milan. He was predeceased by his wife Joy Carr Holt and his 6 siblings (Ethelene Holt Rich, Mildred Holt Miles, Ruth Holt McMullan, B. Dan Holt, Robert L. Holt, and Huey T. Holt). He is survived by his two children David Harrison Holt, Jr. (Dale) of Anderson, SC and Alys Marie Holt of Cary, NC, six grandchildren (Matthew, Brian, Hayden and Harrison Holt, and Alex Bates and Kelly
O'Donnell), and eight great grandchildren (Adeline, Isaac, Yago, and Dandara Holt, Jackson, Owen and Brooks Bates, and Logan O'Donnell). He had numerous cousins, nieces and nephews that he adored.
Dr. Holt grew up in Milan and graduated from Milan High School in 1950. He loved football and played on Milan's teams in his youth. Upon graduation he attended UT Martin, initially intending to follow in his father's footsteps as a farmer. However, after a semester in agriculture he concluded he was much better suited for the medical field. With several years of studying and hard work, he gained entrance into and eventually graduated from UT
medical school. About the time of his graduation, he married his high school sweetheart and eventual mother of his two children, Joy Carr. During his postgraduate training, he served in the US Air Force in Thule, Greenland and subsequently in McDill Air Force Base in Tampa, FL. After completing his military obligation, he spent an additional year in postgrad training in Boston, MA and then practiced medicine in Memphis for three years. Eventually, largely due to his wife's ragweed allergies and the paucity of ragweed in south FL, the young couple -by this time with two young tikes – relocated to Fort Lauderdale. He had a long and
enjoyable medical practice - retiring when he was 85 years of age!
His last move was to Cary, NC, several years after death of his wife Joy, to be close to his daughter Alys. His last years were filled with numerous trips to Milan, visiting with his family and old friends, and making new friends and regaling them all with his stories and tales…of which he had many.
Funeral services will be at Bodkin Funeral Home at 2000 South First Street in Milan, TN on Saturday, November 2, 2024, with visitation with the family from 11AM-1PM and the service will be at 1PM. After the service, there will be a short graveside ceremony at Chapel Hill Baptist Church Cemetery at 76 Chapel Hill Road in Milan, TN.
