George
Killebrew
February 13, 1939 – April 6, 2025
George Buckley Killebrew, former Mayor of Milan, passed away on April 6, 2025. He was preceded in death by his wife, Linda, whom he dearly loved, and he considered a true blessing from God, his first beloved wife, Nancy and his beloved sister Ann Killebrew. Surviving him is his daughter Carla Clenney Workman (Harry), grandson Chad Futrell (Ashley), great grandchildren Brycen, Anzleigh and Buckley, great grandson Braydon Hendricks, a brother Charles Killebrew, nephew and niece Chad and Anita and great nephews Charlie and Andy Killebrew.
He was born in Martin on February 13, 1939, son of Hoyt Layette and Charlie Mae Killebrew, and moved to Milan in 1952 where he graduated from Milan High School in 1957. He received an accounting degree from the University of TN and graduated from the University of TN Executive Development Program. George served as Controller for W. R. Grace & Co., Assistant International Controller for Harman International Industries and Controller for United Foods Inc. (Pictsweet).
George served as Mayor of Milan for ten years, becoming the first elected four-year term mayor in his first re-election. He decided to retire at the end of his third term on December 31, 2007. During his terms he served on the Municipal Technical Advisor Service Committee, was Chairman of the West TN Mayors Association, and served as a Director on the TN Municipal League Board. He was elected as the first Mayor Representative, by the mayors of a nine-county district, to serve on the first Homeland Security Board after 9/11 and faithfully served until he retired. He loved the time spent working for the citizens of Milan and his association with the city employees.
The City of Milan owned the football field (Johnnie Hale Stadium) where the Milan Bulldogs play football. After a MSSD Director of Schools had prayer taken away before MHS football games, Geroge led the charge to have prayer re-instated before all football games.
He was an avid golfer, Milan Bulldog supporter and a University of TN sports and band supporter. George attended 50 straight UT/Alabama football games between 1959 – 2008. He was a member of the New Hope Well Church in Medina.
He was wonderful husband whose happiness came from his love for friends and especially his love for his God, wife and family.
Memorials may be directed to the building fund of the New Hope Well Church or to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
