James
Sloan
June 22, 1936 – March 11, 2026
We gather today to honor and celebrate the life of James Hamlin Sloan, a cherished member of the Milan community, who passed away peacefully on March 11, 2026, at the age of 89. Known affectionately as James to his friends and family, he leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and selflessness that will be fondly remembered by all who knew him.
Born in Milan, Tennessee, on June 22, 1936, James was the beloved son of the late James W. and Lucille Scroggins Sloan. His early years in Milan laid the foundation for a life full of achievement and service. A proud graduate of Milan High School's class of 1954, he carried the spirit of his hometown throughout his life. After many dedicated years, he retired from a fulfilling career at the Milan Arsenal, where he was well-respected by his colleagues. After retirement, he worked as a funeral assistant for Bodkin Funeral Home.
James's devotion to his family was the cornerstone of his life. He was a loving husband to his wife of 52 years, Jane Sloan, and a guiding light to his daughters, Elicia Davenport and Leigh Ann Bray, married to Barry. His role as a grandfather to Morgan Bray, Luke Bray, married to Kallie, and Chase Davenport, married to Daniela, was one of his greatest joys. His laughter and wisdom will also be greatly missed by his great-grandchildren, Scarlette Blankenship and Millie Bray.
An active member of the Milan Cumberland Presbyterian Church, James's faith was a testament to his character, guiding him through life's challenges and triumphs. His selfless nature was evident in his unwavering commitment to his community and to his church family.
James was an avid fisherman, a passion that he pursued with the same love and patience that he applied to all areas of his life. His friends and family will remember the countless hours spent by the water, where he found peace and shared his knowledge and stories with anyone willing to listen.
Those who knew James would describe him as the embodiment of love, imbued with a sense of humor that could light up a room, and a selflessness that knew no bounds. He was a man who prioritized the happiness and wellbeing of others above all else, and his legacy is one of kindness and generosity.
Memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 21. 2026, at 1 PM and his visitation will be held from 12 - 1 with all services being held at Bodkin Funeral Home.
