James Joseph Stanek, age 99, died peacefully on Wednesday, May 23 at his home in Milan, TN. Jim was born at Cook County Hospital in Chicago on April 23, 1919 to Elizabeth Havorka and James Stanek, Sr. He grew up in Chicago. James went to work for Kellogg, which became ITT. When they moved the company to Milan, his family came with them. He worked for ITT for 46 years.
Jim was a member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon and elder. He volunteered for multiple jobs there to help with church maintenance, and made sure the doors were open and the thermostat was perfect for Sunday mornings. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge 191.
Jim is survived by his wife of 40 years, Jean Hill Stanek, a son James (wife Kay) Stanek, Jr., a daughter Cynthia Johnson, and 3 stepchildren, John (wife May) Weems, JoAnn Weems, and Jeanne (husband Bubba) Martin, 19 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his previous wife of 34 years Evelyn Claussen Stanek, sons Robert Stanek, Joe Shaffer, and Bill Weems, brothers Ray and Frank, and sister Virginia Bichusa.
Celebration of Life will be Friday, June 1, 2018, at Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Milan at 2:00 pm. Casual attire is preferred.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Milan, TN or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Memphis, TN.
