Lota Jewell Cowan, age 89 of Atwood, passed away on September 13, 2020 at Milan General Hospital after a brief illness. She was born in Red Bay, AL on March 28, 1931 to Benjamin and Emma Ridge Garrett. She had previously worked at the Milan Arsenal and W. S. Wormser Co. Besides her parents, Jewell was preceded in death by her husband James Edward Cowan, two grandsons Chris Cowan and Miguel Padilla, two great-grandsons Ryan Cowan and John Cavaness, one brother, and four sisters. She is survived by five children James Cowan of Atwood, Jack Cowan (Betty) of Rosemark, Teresa Taylor (David) of Medina, Ronald Cowan of Memphis and Trina Lawrence (Jamie) of Milan, two sisters Iva Nell Garrett of Atwood and Helen Cowan of Orlando, FL, eighteen grandchildren, Cindy Pinson, Jeff Cowan, Tracy Cowan, Nick Cowan, Raven Browning, Dawn Harris, Lee Ann Allen, Robin Cavaness, Callie Specker, Ronald Wayne Cowan, April Gateley, Jeramie Redmond, Jack Redmond, Josh Taylor, Cody Taylor, Brittany Barner, Erin Lawrence and Wade Lawrence, forty-two great grandchildren, and 15 great-great grandchildren. Funeral service will be held on Friday, September 18, 2020 at 2 pm at Bodkin Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Pisgah Cemetery in Atwood. Visitation with the family will be held on Thursday evening from 5 9 pm and from 12 2 pm Friday at the funeral home. The family has requested that mask be worn during the visitation and the service.
