On December 6, 2020, Lois Mayo, at 104 years and surrounded by her Tennessee family, passed quietly to her heavenly home. She was born Lois Carolyn Crenshaw on June 28, 1916, in Lucy, near Millington, TN. She was the last of eight children of Metis and Mary Virginia Bennett Crenshaw. She was married for 64 years to Milton Mayo, former Milan coach and superintendent, until his passing from a stroke in 2001. They met at West TN Normal School (now University of Memphis). She was a scholarship player on the last womens basketball team the University had until resuming play in 1972. Mrs. Mayo interrupted college to marry in 1937, began teaching in Milan City schools in 1952, and received her Batchelors degree in 1956 from Bethel College, McKenzie, TN. She taught Science, English, and Physical Education in Milan schools for 26 years and retired in 1978. Mrs. Mayo entered into a personal relationship with Christ as a young mother. The Mayos were active in Oakwood and Northside Baptist Churches and were founding members of Temple Baptist, serving there for over 30 years. She led ladies prayer meetings and Bible studies for many years. She remained alert in mind and heart even as her body weakened. She was preceded in death by her husband Milton Mayo, her parents, her oldest daughter, Carolyn McDowell, and a beloved sister, Nancy Crenshaw Jones. She considered her wealth and legacy her priceless offspring.
