Obituary

Martha Sue Ayers, a cherished soul whose life blossomed with grace and generosity, passed away peacefully on May 26, 2026, at NHC in Milan. Born on May 27, 1932, in Sharon, she entered the world destined to leave an indelible mark on all who knew her. As the retired co-owner of the Milan Florist and Greenhouse, Martha cultivated beauty not only through her work but in the hearts of her community.

For an extraordinary seventy years, Martha was a devoted member of the Milan First Baptist Church, where her faith and kindness radiated like a guiding light. She was beloved by her many friends, neighbors, and church members, who often admired her beautiful smile and gentle spirit—a testament to a heart that knew no bounds when it came to love and compassion.

Martha’s departure came surrounded by the faithful caregivers at NHC and the tender presence of her beloved sister-in-law, Darlene Ayers, whose companionship at her final moments was a comfort beyond measure.

A woman devoted to family, Martha is lovingly remembered by her son, Richard Thomas Ayers, and his wife, Teresa, of Jackson. Her legacy lives on vibrantly through her grandchildren—Andrew Ayers of Milan, Jason Ayers and his wife, Jessica, of Jackson, William Ayers and his wife, Jennifer of Winter Park, FL, and Sarah Ayers Hurtt and her husband, Stephen of Jackson—each carrying forward the strength and kindness that defined her life. Her spirit further flourishes in the hearts of her nine great-grandchildren, who stand as a testament to the enduring power of her love.

While her loving presence is deeply missed, Martha was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Jewel Dent Ayers, as well as her parents, Callier and Relma Roberts Chandler. She joins her son, Robert Gene Ayers, and siblings, Harold Chandler, Cornelia Powell, and Ruby Nell Burkett, in eternal rest.

Martha Sue Ayers’ life was a bouquet of unwavering faith, familial devotion, and unfailing warmth. Her legacy of love and kindness will continue to bloom eternally in the lives she touched so profoundly.

A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
