Obituary

Our community has lost a beloved treasure. Naomi Frances Spellings Ogle passed peacefully in her sleep Friday, February 28 at the age of 87 at the NHC Healthcare facility in Milan. Born on a family farm in Lavinia, TN to the late Percy and Nina Blake Spellings, Naomi became known in Milan and West Tennessee as an exceptional public school teacher, music teacher and extraordinary musician. Naomi spent a lifetime playing piano in public for banquets, receptions, pageants, talent shows, gospel groups, weddings, and funerals. She was the accompanist for the Gibson Co. Seniors Chorus and for many years played popular music and the Alma Mater at Milan High School Alumni Associations Alumni Day. She was the Alumnis Honoree of the Year in 1995. Ms. Ogle was also a pianist and faithful choir member for over 50 years at First United Methodist Church in Milan, where she was a longtime member. Music was a natural, God-given gift for Naomi, who was nurtured by her mother Nina, a pianist at Pleasant Hill Methodist Church in Cedar Grove. A 1950 graduate of Milan High School, Ms. Ogle graduated from Lambuth College in Jackson, TN, majoring in music and minoring in education. She played piano for many events at Lambuth and in the Jackson area. While at Lambuth, she had the opportunity to perform in community events with Wink Martindale, from Jackson, who later became a well-known television and radio personality, and game show host. Ms. Ogle began her teaching career in 1955 and taught for 39 years. After living in Florida for seven years, where her two daughters were born, she returned to her hometown of Milan and taught 2nd, 4th, 7th, and 8th grades and public school music. She directed musical programs at K. D. McKellar Elementary School, where every student was a participant. She began teaching piano students while still in high school. Her goal as a teacher was always for her pupils to endeavor to reach their highest potential. Ms. Ogle was named Milans Distinguished Classroom Teacher in 1990. Her last years of teaching were devoted to fourth grade at K. D. McKellar until her retirement in 1994. Her lifelong career as a musician carried Naomi to many venues and special experiences. One of her most memorable events was playing piano for singer, Dixie Carter, a native of McLemoresville, who became a well-known film, television and stage actress. Ms. Carter came to sing at the Wesley Fountain Place assisted living center in Milan, granting a request from Carters personal cook, who also worked at the Wesley center. The activity director had secretly asked Naomi if she would like to play the piano when Dixie Carter came to Wesley. Tears came to her eyes and she said, "I have prayed and prayed that someday I could play for Dixie Carter to sing." Completely overwhelmed at the opportunity, Naomi was sworn to secrecy for two weeks about Ms. Carters planned performance in Milan, telling only her daughter, Lisa, the day of the event. Before the performance, Naomis only question to Ms. Carter was, "In what key do you need me to play?" In addition to her appearances as a pianist, Ms. Ogle was an active volunteer for the Milan Alumni Association, Milan Mustard Seed, at nursing homes and at many church events. Ms. Ogle was preceded in death by her youngest daughter, Camille Ogle Pratt, and an older brother, Percy Julian Spellings. She is survived by her daughter, Lisa Ogle Smithey and son-in-law Chris Smithey; grandson, Brandon James Pratt; a younger brother, Billy Blake Spellings (Dee) of Fairfax, VA; nephews, Robert Spellings and his children, Charlotte and Tyler, and Michael Spellings (Sarah); a niece, Melissa Spellings Daniels and her children, Blake, Keaton, Owen and Claire Daniels, all from Virginia; and niece, Kymber Blake and husband, Scott Froschauer of California.
